Some nice shots of my superior...

FRoberts Dec 10, 2007 01:47 AM

Some nice shots of my superior Texas rats....ok ok perhaps I am somewhat biased and a little cocky as well...

I also am going to be breeding a bright orange generic rat snake into the mixture...it is for the most part an Everglades Rat snake...that I got by breeding a het bubble gum rat to a Blotchless Everglades Rat snake and then line bred for two generations to accentuate the orange...

I know I have posted this already...it is owned by a friend of mine...he'll let me borrow it for a few kickbacks... LOL

I will however keep a line that are pure Texas rat snakes both Leucistic and Lavender...but I have a thing for bright orange rat snakes...hehe

anyone working with these and or know any of the history? I would assume that they are crosses but was wondering if the line acts any differently. Thanks in advance.

The pic is of a Bakers Crossing Bairds rat

I work with a pair of them though I cannot prove WITHOUT a doubt that they are pure. There are reports of pure lucy blacks coming out of Ohio and I have heard of reports that one was found in Erie Pa.Who knows what the truth is.
I got a nice clutch of 10 this year and from my observations the hatchlings of the lucys represented as blacks have a smaller head structure than known texas lucys.I have seen this on several occasions at herp shows where several venders my be representing both sub species.Just my observation and proves nothing.I do know that the lucys I own are very calm to handle.
My breeder female.

One of this years hatchlings.

Thanks for the info and the comp. I've heard all the stories about an OH animal but one would think there'd be more specifics if it were true. In any case I don't really care its just nice to know what you're getting into. I just think that the black rat head shape is infinitely more attractive as is the slightly smaller size and better disposition. I'm only looking for a single docent animal to use with lectures anyway.

The bairds should go this year. I also have a pair of generic Val Verde County animals that hail from Terry Vendeventer and a 2007 air of Loma Alta’s from Troy Hibbits. All in all you just can't beat bairds for a pet rat snake. Good size, superb colorations, disposition and chow hounds to boot!

being where a leucy BR was found. I also heard from a second source that an Ohio leucy was also one of the founding animals for the sunglow black rat snake as well.

yes they sure are great looking. Who has a worse tempermeant a Leuc Tx rat or leuc Black rat?

Perhaps its subjective individual rat impossible to say?

I ask this as looking into one or the other

Thank you

DMong Dec 12, 2007 08:41 PM

Well, they BOTH can be pretty nasty,...it really depends on the individual snake,....but I think you'll find in general, that blacks are typically a little better.

On another side note,....I really would have to question the "purity" of some strains of either leucistic form.

I think it would be dificult, if not impossible to tell the difference anyway!
