Not all blood pythons turn red. The most common color is tan/brown. It is possible to get red/yellow and brown hatchlings out of one clutch. Some specimans show red real early and these appear to be very vibrant as adults. Others start out orangish and turn more red as they age. Usually by Age 3-4 they have shown most of their true color. At least this has been my observation and experiences.

I use damp spagnum moss as a substrate in part of my cage. I make sure it's only slightly damp and I mist with warm water every other day to keep it moist. My bloods love the stuff and spend most of their time in the spagnum. A hide filled with some spagnum or wet paper towel would at least give it a moist place to go to when it needs it.
