if you could have only one?

Bluerosy Dec 11, 2007 01:29 PM

Okay with monetary value aside . lets say that snakes are all equal value and/or you are a billionare and the values don't mean a thing.

What snake would you choose if you could have only one? It can be any type of snake as long as it is only one (1).

This is a real hard one for me given the criteria but i am sure it is a Florida king or rosy boa. Which morph or locale I don't know. I will put my choice up after some others.

WW Speckled ?

A "blue~rosy" boa?

I will let you guys know after some thinking.

Mine would have to be an Alterna.. Any one of the following 3 females would due.. I don't know if it's against the rules of this thread, but if they the animal i choose could be gravid that would work! ...

I guess i could never really just have one.. Maybe one rack full maybe, but one snake would not work!

i would get a banded coastal phase cal king, a nice brown and yellow banded one. one of the first snakes I owned was a big female almost 5'.

if that didn't work out, I would get a male brooksi phase of floridana king, not het for anything, just good looks and some beef.

if all else failed I would get a black pine snake.

the end,

okay, lets see if we can fix this.. " I can't pick just one" syndrome.

It is 2990. They are sending you to another planet for research for the next 50 years. You cannot bring nor introduce species. You can bring one snake as a pet.

I will pick a female coastal rosy boa from Lake Elsinore, CA.

It was between that or a male brooksi from the early canal stock. I picked the female rosy because they live longer. Female rosys also get bigger than male rosys which is why I mentioned a female. With florida kings it is the opposite with the males attain a larger size than females.

Oh well.

wonder why some of you pick gender of snake if it's only for a pet? just wondering.

I already answered that but here it is again..

Male Florida kings get much bigger than female Florida kings.

Female Rosy Boas get bigger (and fatter) than males. Male rosy boas also stay on the slim side whereas females get nice and chunky.

Hey if you can only pick one snake for life you better research and know these things. LOL!

Anerythristic florida king also possible het for Peanut Butter and sulfur lavender:

Bluerosy Dec 11, 2007 11:08 PM

I see you missed what I was trying to say. Males get bigger in some species and females do in others. It depends on what type of snakes you are talking about. It's not just the size that is effected by gender but Colour and disposition as well.

I understand it after keeping a colony of pines- its a completely different beast altogether. just like I would rather have a black pine over an indigo IF I could only have one, hahaha. a 6-7 ft pine is an incredible creature.
i guess it is understood with the question that the single beast would be THE prime representative specimen of the particular species. imo, a 7ft black and white thick as your forearm northern pine has to be one of the best representatives of what is good about north american herpetology and herpetoculture.

chrish Dec 11, 2007 08:47 PM

Wow, that's tough. It probably wouldn't be something I bought, it would have to be something I found in the wild.

If I had to get rid of everything else, I think I would keep this guy -

I have a few others snakes that mean something to me, but this Rosyboa was the fruition of a 30 year dream to catch a wild rosy (of course, I didn't live within 1000 miles or Rosy habitat during these 30 years).

I've owned quite a few rosies in the interim, but I flipped this baby under a rock. It is hard to describe the joy of waiting that long then achieving that dream. It was an amazing moment in my herping "career".

I'd forego the one snake and get one stadium size fridge loaded with fresh cold beer. after 4 or 5 hours you wont be agonizing anymore about the one snake you could have taken. You didnt specify though, can i also take wings?

daveb Dec 12, 2007 07:50 PM

you could have the wings delivered...
I know a good place with some monster buffalo wings ( hey buffalo is nearby) that will deliver within 30 minutes. take these guys with you.
as far as the beer goes, what'll you do once the fridge is empty? I say pack a still and create your own recipe. by the time you come back you'll have 30 flavors down pat and you can go into business as the next sam adams almost immeditately. then you can buy all the snakes and wings that you want.

Tony D Dec 12, 2007 01:45 PM

What would you keep if it was only one taxon? For me it would have to be thayeri of alterna. You could have a sizable collection with no two alike. Guess you could do that with roses too but I think the level of variability is higher by an order of magnatude with the kings.

Upscale Dec 12, 2007 07:02 AM

It is really painful to think that I never took any pictures as a young guy, of all the snakes and critters that I have kept at one time or another. One of my all time favorites would have to be Indigo snakes. Maybe it’s because I’m not allowed to have them and that makes them seem more desirable? If you have ever experienced keeping them, you might agree no matter where you live though…
Here’s my only picture of one, my mom holding a long term pet from a few years ago…

I like rubbers. I had Charina off and on over the years. They facinate me. I have had different locales (most of them Calif) but I had a large group of about 15 adults from Washington that were the bomb. They ate more often and would not shut as early as the calif cousins to the south. The real remakable thing was they ate weaners. Yes thats right. Like the minature canned type. No kidding.
