Are any cuts in the alterna range a good place to look? How long to you search a cut ? How large are cuts and when do you stop hunting them? Thanks in advance for handling all the newbie questions!

Now, at this time it is illegal to "hunt" on the right of way including road cuts. We hope to get that changed next session, but right now you only legally observe or photograph....

The size of the cut is not as much of a factor as the habitat around it, but a larger cut is more likely to hold your interest longer (more to look at as you work back and forth). it is also possible to observe animals on the roadway itself, roadcruising is a tried and true method.

How long do you hunt, as long as you can stand it... I have seen animals in the morning hours after most people have turned in.

Thanks how long would a long cut be? What is good habitat around a cut and are crotes also pretty common around cuts?

Long cuts can be almost 1/2 mile, most are shorter, broken up by the ups and downs of the terrain. Crotes are there, they are part of the draw. You really should click on the alterna page at the top of this page. I learned a heckuva lot doing so and some of these people went through a lot of trouble to put it up! Now that said, it has pics of road cuts and maps to tell you general localities to find these beauties. There are 3 kinds of ratsnakes, two kings, milks, pits, and tons of other herps on these same cuts as well as the coolest inverts in the U.S., IMHO! Read that page it will enlighten you!
