How can I tame my RES?

corey Aug 25, 2003 07:37 AM

He isnt nippy but he hisses and holds his mouth open when he is held, and I dont really know what to do. Should I treat him like my python and handle him a lot so as to get him used to being handled? What should I do? Thank you in advance for the help. Corey

They are not dogs you do not tame them. You also shouldn't pick them up or handle them if you don't need to.

Aquatic turtles are a look at pet. Try to not hold them as often as possible. They are generally nervous by nature, and frequent handling will only serve to stress the animal.

I saw your message, while am waiting to see if there'll be any advises on helping my poor turtle. I hope she feels better soon. To your question, I always holds my turtle. She loves it and loves to stay on my body as well. She stayed on my back to bask during weekend. I would make sure cleaning hands well after handling her. I am not a turtle or reptile expert, but happen to be a very good friend with one accidentally found RES for 2yrs now. It might be that I had her since she was a hatchling. All amazing experiences with the turtle started then. I am not sure if you can tame an older one. Mine will walk follow me, (mostly) come to see me when I call her up, and (many times) listen when I tell her to stop biting things. But I am careful not to let her have a chance to really bite me though. They are animals. Don't know everything. If yours are not too old, may be you still can tame him or her and can see an amazing side of a pet turtle. Good luck.
