NEW VISION (Kampala, Uganda) 05 December 07 Crocodile Mauls Man
Kampala: Edward Gwebayanga was eaten by a crocodile on Friday. He was a resident of Bukizibu village in Malongo sub-county, which is on the shores of Lake Victoria in Mayuge district.
The area councillor, Moses Lubanga, said Gwebayanga, 20, a bricklayer, had gone to the lake to bathe in the afternoon when the crocodile mauled him.
He is the 19th resident to be killed by crocodiles this year, the LC5 chairman, Ikoba Tigawalana, said.
"We have lost many lives to those animals because we are surrounded by Lake Victoria and forests," he told a council meeting recently.
The councillors resolved to write to the Uganda Wildlife Authority over the matter.
However, Richard Naika, the assistant chief administrative officer, said wildlife authority officials had earlier camped at Missoli, one of the landing sites, and did not solve the problem.
"They said it was the residents who provoke the 'peaceful' animals. They can not kill them," Nakai said.
