Kendrapara (SNS): Residents of a snake-infested village today observed a ritual. Nine years ago, snakes killed several villagers on a single day. Since then, every year on this day, the snake goddess is worshiped with religious fervour in each household. The Pitapata village today witnessed visitors. They included local politicians, block-level officials, police and PRI representatives. On 7 December 1998, five persons, including three from a single family, had died, following cobra bite. It led the people to believe that it was a divine curse. A temple of the snake goddess was set up after a few months.
