Egg Problems........

jennifer2003 Aug 25, 2003 08:45 AM

I am having a problem with my Leopard Gecko eggs, I had one clutch last year and out of those two eggs only one hatched. I currently have three clutches incubating now. I lost one egg out of the first clutch last week, it just all of a sudden started to shrivel and smell bad. Today I found another one starting to shrivel after only 8 days!!! The two clutches have different parents. I am using a Hovabator set at 85 degrees and using vermiculite. The remaining eggs all seem to be fine. What's up???
Could these just be infertile eggs??

Any help or tips would be appreciated.

they could just be bad, sometimes my eggs also just go bad sometimes, the bad eggs usually rotten around 1-2 weeks after they have been layed.
bad eggs are usually caused from that the fact that the mother was weak when she was laying them.

the problem could also be infertile eggs but then you se that they are infertile immidiatelly after they are laid, infertile eggs are for example not as white as fertile ones, but you said that they where looking fine so I dont think it is that.

then the last thing, is your hovabator working? by that i mean is it humid enough? the vermeculite should not be dry, but not wet either, sometimes my eggs colapse because the vermeculite is to dry, (i don´t have a hovabator)

so, I hope this helped you a bit,

the vermiculite is as it should be, I think. I soak it in warm water and then squeeze all the water out till it holds the shape of a ball, fluff it back up and place the eggs in the cup.

Hope that's right.

To get the right humidity for the vermiculite, add enough water so that when you squeeze it in your hand, no water comes out, but the pieces stick to your fingers. I hope that makes sense.

Have you tried Albeys Incubation Method? It utilizes perlite and works great.
