Farmed?...

herpz Dec 13, 2007 08:42 AM

I recently purchased two "farmed" Uromastyx Geyri. One semi-adult and one juvie.(Pair) I'm getting them acclimated now. But I keep hearing that imports can't get acclimated. When I was sold these uros at a local show, I was told farmed Uros are often more healthy then CB because farmed they are out in their native environment but being cared for captively.

With enough time can I get these cute little ones acclimated and handleable?

To be President of the World you'll have to make that female Sudan the perfect nesting site next year. Make it work & I'll kiss your arse in Macy's window!!

I don't know details, but I would treat a farmed animal the same as a WC. They aren't really "in captivity" as we would consider it - at least not as I understand it. Plus they still have to be imported, which is the biggest part of the problem with WC. Lots of stress, lots of parasites, lots of potential health problems.

It's certainly possible that they will tame down just fine with lots of time and patience on your part. Get them settled and healthy first, then worry about whether they will tolerate you. Some get to be fine with people and handling. Others never will put up with it.

I have three Saharans, an adult male WC and two CB babies. Gizmo, our adult male, did amazingly well with acclimating when we brought him home. I attribute this to the fact that we had everything completely set up properly before bringing him home including enclosure, lights, temps, foods, etc. Also, the small locally-owned store we got him from does a really good job of taking care of their reptiles compared to any other store I've seen. He ate well and was curious and not afraid from the first day we had him. He did have pinworms that he was treated for, and though he was a bit skinny, he had gained a good amount of weight and is a wonderful guy. The one thing he HATES is when we try to touch him. He will eat out of our hands daily and doesn't shy away, but we just can't touch him except for taking him out to clean the enclosure or for vet visits.

Our babies are about 4 months old, and though they're both CB, one is very friendly, outgoing, loves to eat out of our hands and doesn't mind being held (only rarely and for only a minute or two). The other baby is still pretty skittish and runs and hides a lot, though she is eating well and basking and doing all the things that baby Uros do, she just doesn't like an audience.

So... they can be acclimated, and after talking with others who have Saharans, I think we really lucked out with our big WC male in that he had no adjustment issues. As for the babies, goes to show that even though they both came from the same situation, they have very different personalities.
