Did I do it right?

kohr Dec 13, 2007 08:33 PM

I haven't fed my mature corns for over 2 weeks. Tonight I put them in a basement room that seems to maintain a temperature between 58-61 deg F and plan to keep them there for 8 to 10 weeks.

Please let me know if I am doing anything wrong. It sure is scary doing this for the first time.

Thanks,
Eric

I agree with Jason - it sounds like you're all set.
Good luck producing babies in 2008!

What is the highest and lowest temp range that can be used during a brumation period?

Well on the low end, you need to keep the snakes above freezing. On the other end of the scale, no brumation is needed - there are plenty of people who keep their snakes heated thoughout the year and breed them successfully.

With an animal as wide-ranging as a corn snake which lives all the way into south Florida (subtropical) and north to Virginia, New Jersey and Kentucky (where it snows in the winter), it's pretty hard to make "minimum" and "maximim" brumation requirements as these things would vary greatly in the wild.

I usually add a middle step in there; I take them out of the snakeroom and put them in a bedroom on a shelf or dresser for about a week, then move them to their hibernation spot.

It goes like this: snakeroom @ 80 dgrees, bedroom @ 65-75 degrees, then hibernation closet where the temps will average 50-55.
