Subocs

wvherp Dec 14, 2007 10:12 AM

Currently I have 2 milks, 4 kings and a female normal corn. I am contemplating getting a pair of subocs in the spring/summer. Do they require any different habitat/feeding choices than my other snakes? Do they need more humidity? Will they eat mice/rats? Heard that some do not like eating mice/rats with hair, only pinks or pups. How about breeding? Any help would be appreciated.

They are not far off from what you are used to. They require ventilation and smaller meals but thats about it.

Of course Dusty has a book on suboc care coming out soon which will have all the info you'd want.

I only have about a year of experience with subocs though so wait for the resident experts to give you the details on them.

Would that be smaller meals more often? Can you elaborate?
Is yours an adult, and what do you feed it?
thanx

Well mine are yearlings and their feeding recently has been a little less regular then before because I have been trying to get them onto frozen thawed meals. But that aside their normal eating pattern was a live fuzzy every week with the occasional skipped week where they just showed no interest. In all honesty I don't know how much of a problem the larger meals causing regurges actually is since mine turn up their nose so to speak at anything that isn't smaller arround then they are.

Hope that helps,

Sean.

Subocs are easy, keep them like you would any other desert snake, I keep my room temp from 69 to 76 and all my cages are on heat tape that is set on 86. They all eat FT mice or rats of appropriate size. I live in East Tx and the humidity is kinda high here but the air CONDITIONER takes care of that. No trick to breeding them, the closer they are to wild caught stock they are, the later they breed. Gravid females in the wild are normally collected after July. Most of my WC don't ovulate until sometime in July but I have some from several generations of CH that start ovulating in June.
Try them, you will like them.

Rick
