hemipenis issue

dagobert Dec 14, 2007 10:11 PM

My male and female Cresteds are about a year and a half old. I've witnessed them mating earlier this week, which is pretty common with them.

However, I noticed yesterday that the males hemipenis is still out. I think it's been out for a few days. While I know that a vet visit will probably be in order, I was wondering if anyone has ever experienced this and how they dealt with it.

I would appreciate any and all experiences with this issue. Thanks.

If it's been out for a couple of days, it may have dried out, and in that situation would most likely require amputation. What I've seen recommended here before in cases like this (usually more immediately than you're describing) is to make sure to keep it moist, usually with sugar water. Beyond that, I don't know what to tell you, as I haven't experienced this before; I'm just relating what I've seen recommended here in the past. You might try the board's search function, as I know this type of issue has been discussed before.

Thank you both for the info.

The problem with things like this is you talk to ten people and you get ten different replies. That's even the case when you talk to people with long term experience in reptiles, and Crested specifically. You still get too many conflicting opinions. I decided in the end to take him to my local reptile vet.

Thank you for the help, though.

Good luck at the Vet. My personal opinion is if you aren't completely convinced the stress of a vet appointment is well worth 100 online opinions and will ease your mind more.

Please let us know how the vet trip goes. It does seem a bit long for "just hanging out", but then I haven't kept a male in years and don't breed so I am of zero help.

Again, good luck and let us know so we may learn your vet's opinion too to add to the bucket. Take care.
