What is Best

BeardedHuman Dec 15, 2007 03:37 AM

Since my wife and I cleaned out my basement we have been enlarging our reptile collection. We have two bearded dragons, two leopard geckos, four crested geckos and a grey tree frog. I bought all of the items needed to accomodate a Chameleon. Screen visionarium lighting and what not. What type of Cham is best for a first time cham owner? I have ten years plus reptile experience I know people worry about this, plus I keep a colony of lobster roaches for feeders so that is not a problem.

Thanks

I'd probably go with a veiled. They're pretty hardy and don't require the high humidity that a panther does.

So will the cham live in the basement? What is the temp range there? If the temp doesn't fall at night (you are keeping a lot of other herps warm), you'll need a way to provide the 10-15 degree drop chams require. Veileds are generally considered a good newbie species as they are pretty much all cbb, we know a lot more about their husbandry, and they are pretty tolerant of mistakes. After veileds, panthers. How big is your cage? Both those species need at least 3'x2'x5' IMHO. Don't get a tiny baby. They can be hard to feed, stress and dehydrate easily. A better breeder will offer babies at 2-3 months old.
