I was 10, it is a pic from 1981 so please forgive the quality. I remember it being a Scarlet Kingsnake, but when I look up pics on the net I found some Mountain Kingsnakes that resemble it more/ I am just wondering. Thanks

It looks to me like either a Nelsoni or Sinaloan. Both milksnakes. In '81 they were both still pretty new and had a big wow factor still. As to which it would a guess. I am leaning towards Nelsoni, because the Sinaloans I remember back then did have that much widening of the black along the spine.

"The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think. Oh by the way, which ones pink?"
That's no Scarlet King,....that actually has lineage from both the Sinaloan, AND the Nelson's Milksnake. It's really not a good "text-book" example of either ssp. That would have probably been marketed as a Sinaloan Milk back then,as hardly anyone new what either was, or the difference between the two were!
I've been involved with both of those subspecies for many years, and I can tell you that most people don't really know what a really great example of nelsoni looks like! many so-called nelsoni are intergrades of both, especially since the albino form of nelsoni has been on the market. There were NOT enough true nelsoni to go around when many were in a frenzy to create more high-dollar albinos, so they used the next best thing available...Sinaloans.
Here is a pic of an animal that's close to the one you have, and another pic of one of the BEST examples I've ever seen of nelsoni!,......these are far between!
best regards, ~Doug
