cloudy eye

amelthia Dec 15, 2007 11:31 AM

I checked on my female last night and she has a cloudy eye, just one. She is not getting ready to shed and she did not retain an eye cap. Other than that she is acting completely normal. I did have her in with my male (which is fine) but now I've decided to ditch that idea. She hasn't eaten in awhile (since she was with her boyfriend) but last time she ate she sucked it right down. I also caught her drooling awhile ago (before her last meal) and didn't think too much of it at the time but now I'm wondering if the two are related, since I've never seen any of my other bloods drool (and it was drool, it was thicker than water). She is breathing fine, no noises, no discharge. Any ideas?

Sorry to hear about your troubles. For the cloudy eye, it could be damaged by a bite or other trauma, or it might be cataracts.
Thick discharge from the mouth could be a RI (respitory infection)or it could be mouth rot, which would explain loss of appetite.
I would strongly suggest you get the snake checked out by a vet.
Good luck
Nick

I looked up the symptoms of mouth rot (I have never actually seen it) and she is not constantly drooling, I saw it for a split second awhile ago (about a month maybe more) and just as I went to look at it she moved and I never saw it again, and the stuff I saw was perfectly clear. Also, there is no white, cheesy stuff in her mouth, and she doesn't sit around with her mouth open, and it looks like its closing normally, no swelling or anything...so I'm not sure if she really has the symptoms. She just sucked down a rat and looks like she's ready for another one..so she must be feeling at least ok. I'm just going to let her sit til I have her looked at..which I'm hoping will be tomorrow, but I may be snowed in - so I hope it stops soon.

A while ago a blood of mine had a clear discharge drooling from his mouth. I think he was drinking before I took him out of his cage and didn't finish swallowing. He has been fine since then, don't know about the eye, though. I think if yours had a resp. infection the liquid would be colored, though I'm not sure.

have you checked your temps and humidity recently? I'm not sure if you have them in a dedicated controlled snake room, or just in the house, but At this time of year where winter drafts prevail, and artificial heat dries everything out; you may need to up them both. If there is even a mild infection, and they get too dry it can escalate very quickly (as I learned the hard way last year)

The cloudy eye thing has been too low of humidity for me, from my experience. After the next shed it should be all good. For the drooling I think it might be early signs of an RI.Just keep your eye on it or even take him to a vet.I took mine in to the vet and ended up giving him shots which cleared it up.Mine was an everyday accurance though. Also if it is an RI he can spread it to the other snake. If he did have a drink of water that could be it too, maybe over drank? I know if I pick mine up they will regurge that water sometimes.Good luck.

I would go to a good Reptile Vet. I had some bad experiences with vets in the past. But ever since I have found my current Vet. I have no proublem taking them as if they were my own children. If you don't have a regular vet. It would be a good idea from my experience to find one before you have a proublem. If you wait until things are bad, it could be to late for you beloved animal. Reptile are really good at hiding illness. I don't know much about the clouded eye in bloods, but if it dosn't clear up soon, I wouldn't second guess it for long. Best of luck and happy holidays.

I didnt go to a vet - I called the guy that the local reptile vet goes to when he needs help with a diagnosis, and he was able to get ahold of a friend who's had experience with a clogged tear duct. I'm actually getting ready to go on vacation, so my snake had some bad timing, but he has agreed to take care of her for the week that I'm gone and get her a Detrol(?) shot, so I'm hoping that will clear up the infection. But I'm not entirely sure what to do about the clog yet. I'm taking her to him to look at tomorrow. (He diagnosed her from some close up pics I sent him.)

That is how I got into trouble with my borneo. She had what seemed like a mild infection, which I treated and then went on vacation...A week later her face was so swollen when I returned that she was unrecognizeable... She survived but is deformed. It was a long road back.
If you're going away, make sure you give her a humid hide with some very damp spagnum partially over the hot spot. As I was told, If they get too dry and cold, they have a very hard time fighting off sickness.

I'll bet that's a relief.

Its not a tear duct per se, thats just what I called it, but it is a duct that drains any debris out of the eye.
