ultrasonic mister

JUNGLE Aug 25, 2003 11:01 AM

Last week I bought an ultrasonic mister from Walgreens and piped it into my viv using a timing device (like I heard other people have done). A week later I lost 2 frogs. Could the ultrasonic mister have killed my frogs? Or was it probably a coincidence that they died after setting up the mister.

I dont think the mister would have killed the frogs. How often did it run? did you use tap water? Was the humidity high enough?

The humidity was over 90% and I used spring water. What type of water are you supposed to use?

Which type did you buy... the Cool Mist or Hot Mist? If you by accident picked up the Heat Mist, basically creating a Sauna (spelling?) that is more than likely what killed them. Also, how long did you keep the UH running, and in how large of a tank? Assuming the answers are "Cool Mist" and "Not for a long period of time", then it was more than definately a coincidence given that the UH's are so highly recommended.

For further clarification. "Cool Mist" is not always the same as "Ultrasonic." Usually, a "cool mist" system is different than an ultrasonic system. In fact, I have seen only one humidifier that was an ultrasonic, but was called "cool mist." Of course, ultrasonics put out cool mist, but that is another story.

In short, make sure it is really an ultrasonic when buying a cool mist humidifier.

I also agree that if it was an ultrasonic humidifier it alone probably did not kill them. I would look into, however, what changes you made because of the humidifier, such as dampness, temperature, etc.
