Odd Anery

xBlackHeart Dec 15, 2007 11:00 PM

This snake is part of the group that I picked up last week. I find the redish/pink coloring very weird for an anery. Thoughts?

I am sort of new to this so I wouldnt take this as gospel but that looks like a ghost to me which is a mix of Hypo and Anerythrism type "A". Like I said though I am new at this so could someone else confirm it for me.

Not that odd of an anery. I've seen many many pictures of similar anerys.
it is slightly possible it could be a dark ghost but I don't think so...check the belly checks..if they are faded it could possibly be a ghost but if they are dark and defined it would most likely be an anery.

Like I said before though, I don't really see anything out of the ordinary with that ANERY...lol

If that was a female, it would be odd, but like Jimmy, I've seen many male aneries like this. It's the females that generally lack those non gray tones.

So, the development of the pinkish color is not weird? My anery adults are all jet black with little to no fading or yellow sides. It is just odd to get someone else's adults and not be able to see the snake progress as it ages.
The snake is a male, and if I recall, has dark belly patterns.

Thanks again!

A common mistake in our business is thinking that what we mostly see is what mostly exists in the hobby. I wouldn't say half of all I've seen were this way, but I estimate that I've seen at least 300 adult male aneries that had some shade of brown markings. We don't yet know what causes the brown in them. It could be a separate gene or just a polygenic trait. Not unlike myriad different looks in amelanistic corns, no two aneries are alike. This trend is most obvious in ghosts. With almost 99% efficacy, anyone can visually distinguish a male from a female by the brown-toned markings in the males.

Here is a shot of yearling aneries. These are all broodmates from breeding an anery motley with a charcoal (het anery). It's easy to pick out the only three males in the lot.

I really mean it. That is a great shot and answers my question completely.
Thanks again for taking the time.

I guess I was wrong LOL. But no matter what is wrong or right that is a beautiful snake you have there.

Speaking of odd anerys, I was sold a "ghost", which as a hatchling had very pink saddles. I now suspect she is anery as she has been bred to a snow 2 yrs running - supposedly het hypo - and all of her babies are hatched as anery. None are showing any faded black signs of being ghost, so I'm assuming they're all anery. However some are very very dark, some are paler and very pink as she was in her youth.

The mother:

2 of the babies (grown on)

The same paler baby from above, grown on more

All of their belly scales were like this (including mum's)

So they can vary
