killing mice

Aaron Dec 16, 2007 03:08 PM

Is gassing accepted by the industry as a humane way to kill rodents?
What kind of equipment is needed and how do you do it?

I breed my own mice and usually just thump them before feeding them to my snakes but I was thinking of building up a supply in the winter while my snakes are hibernating to make less work for myself in the summer. I could easily thump the adults but I'd hate to have to thump pinkies and fuzzies because it's hard to do it accuratly. Thanks for any advice.

Yes, CO2 is considered humane. But it will not work for pinkies or fuzzies. People usually feeze them. I get my CO2 supplies from a beer/wine homebrewer supply store.

check out these links for a chamber. Personally we use a sealed 12 qt tub with measured CO2. It is more humane to freeze anything younger than 14 days, as they do not respond to CO2 humanly. It will create an acid in their lungs and cause a lot of pain and damage. Best to put them in a deep freeze.
