Pewter x Pewter.

smell Dec 18, 2007 10:26 AM

When you breed Pewter x Pewter you get pastel, cinnamon, normal, pewter and silver bullet.
Am I right ?

It's a double het x double het breeding so the possible outcomes of the top of my head for each egg are:

1:16 super pastel super cinnamon (don't know that this has been produced or named yet)
1:8 super pastel cinnamon (I haven't kept up with the combo names)
1:16 super pastel
1:8 pastel super cinnamon (again, not sure of the name)
1:4 pastel cinnamon (aka pewter)
1:8 pastel
1:16 super cinnamon
1:8 cinnamon
1:16 normal

It's not really double het breeding because they are co dom genes. But out of breeding a Pewter x Pewter here is what you can get:

Normals
Pastels
Cinnamons
Super Pastels
Super Cinnys
Pastel Cinnys - AKA Pewter
Super Pastel Cinny - AKA Sterling Pastel
Super Cinny Pastel
Super Cinny Super Pastel - AKA Silver Bullet

Pictues of all of these except the Pastel Super Cinny is in Kevin McCurley's book or on the NERD website and Ralph Davis's website.

It IS a codom cross, but since the cinnamon is "het" for super cinny, and the pastel is "het" for super pastel, it is true that a pewter is a "double het" for super pastel super cinny!

Which makes me feel god, since we have 1.2 pewters which will be ready next season!

What else are you going to have this year Brad? The Het albinos I bought off of you are ready to go this year and I hope they give me something good.

brhaco Dec 18, 2007 07:19 PM

Hey! Yes, it's turning out to be a good year so far. I've had lockups from the following pairings:

Pied X het Pied
Pied X pastel
Pied X spider
Pastel X pastel
Het Clown X het Clown
Pastel X normal

Plus I'll be pairing my male FIRE to both normal and pastel females starting in January.

So how big are those het albinos?

Awsome!! Good luck with all of your projects. The male het is 1190 and the female is 1350 ( a little on the small side but I thought I might try her) I am also pairing a pastel male with 4 or 5 females and my lightest "normal" male with another of my odd looking females.

Thanks, but we can take it even a little further.

If you go back to the actual definition of "heterozygous" as only meaning having two different versions of the same gene (i.e. an unmatched set) not only does it not require that the mutation be recessive (and the hets normal looking) it also doesn't require that the homozygous mutant version be a "super".

It's a fine distinction while we don't yet have a proven dominant ball python mutation. Let’s say for example if there where a homozygous spider that looked just like the heterozygous spiders it would still be correct and actually necessary for distinguishing the two to refer to heterozygous spiders. So not only does het not mean normal looking carrier or a recessive gene (it just works out that way with recessive mutations) het also doesn't mean half way to something else (it just works out that way with co-dominant mutations). Heterozygous just means having an unmatched pair of whatever gene you are talking about.

In the case of a pewter it is het for pastel because it got the pastel mutant version of the pastel gene from one parent and the normal for pastel version of the pastel gene from the other parent. Likewise, for the independent cinnamon gene it got the mutant version from one parent and the normal for cinnamon version from the other. A pewter is a true double het because it has mismatched pairs of genes at those two locations. Once you understand that you can use the same rules as any double het breeding to predict the offspring odds.

Stylandawg2206,
Actually the Super Cinny Pastel is the Silver Bullet. The Super Cinny Super Pastel has not been produced yet.

Thanks all for the answers.
So the Silver bullet is the same as the Silver streak ?

stylindawg2006 Dec 19, 2007 10:49 AM

According to The Complete Ball Python by Kevin McCurley from NERD, the Silver Bullet is the Super Cinny Super Pastel. I am looking at the book right now and that is exactly what it says. It says nothing about Super Cinny Pastel.

Exotics by Nature Dec 19, 2007 11:42 AM

Sorry, that is an error in that book. The Silver Bullet is the Super Cinnamon Pastel Jungle.

Albey is correct, the Super Cinnamon Super Pastel has not yet been produced!

Happy Holidays...

After doing some extra research I found that I was wrong. We all make mistakes. So I guess now we need to make that Super Cinny Super Pastel a reality

Exotics by Nature Dec 19, 2007 05:54 PM

It is hard to sort out some of the confusion with this stuff.

Hopefully someone will produce one this year. I "may" have a shot later on this season at a Super Cinnamon Super Pastel Genetic Stripe. Not sure if that would be cool or not but my 1.3 Pewters Het Stripe are looking good.

Take care...

Super Cinny Super Pastel Genetic stripe would be interesting to see. Good luck with that. I look forward to seeing pictures when you hatch out babies.
