Egg-bound?

jmartin104 Dec 18, 2007 03:08 PM

With the way my season has gone, I should not be surprised. However, I have never had any issues with this with any reptiles. I have a female that was due to lay on 11/15/2007. Although, ALL of my females were late on delivery, she still has not laid. She has several eggs and lays with her lower 1/3rd almost straight out. She does not appear to be uncomfortable or act lethargic or irritated. My local vets are reptile-stupid. Thoughts?

TIA!

Well Jay, I've never run into it either. I personally would let it go a while longer. The two solutions I've heard of would be to administer some pitocin/oxytocin (no idea on the dosage), or two partially asperate the egg nearest the vent with a needle. You might want to e-mail Dave Barker and get his thoughts....

Yeah, I'll wait a bit and do some research in the mean time. Thanks!

I am not sure about using this medication - Petocin on snakes, however, I know this is what the gave my wife to induce labor 11 years ago with our fist son. The next two were born without her having to be induced, but the first one with the Petocin lasted for-ev-er like 18 hours...thats why I still remember the medications name. I am not sure about this, but it is a really interesting topic?

Late clutches can be very weird and I have had females go way past the date and even shed again and then lay..

I do not know why.......it only seems to happen when i have a girl go way off season. The double shed thing has happened to me several times.... even this year!

I bet she is FINE!!!!!

Let's hope so. She's not looking like she's going to explode. I saw a picture of an egg-bound Ball Python and damn she looked like she was going to pop.

I've seen a few clients @ the vet I work at who've brought in snakes they felt were egg-bound.. Honestly I've never seen one that actually was. They usually just hang onto their eggs a little late for one reason or another. I'd wait a bit longer. If she seems to become incredibly uncomfortable, you may want to try a little lube (KY or similar) around the vent with a small cotton swab (don't PUSH, just right around the inner lip) I've seen that help with snakes & birds.

Good luck, keep us updated!
