How bad is it?

mysticaldiva Dec 19, 2007 10:22 AM

So, I got my snake out the day before yesterday to feed him. It wasn't until after I fed him that I noticed he had crawled through a small plastic ring and had squeezed himself into it. I cut it off, but it left an indent around his body which is still there. When he tried to get his food past that point, he had a lot of trouble, but finally managed. Normally, he eats small rats, but the pet store was out. Instead, I gave him an adult mouse and he still had trouble with it. Next time I feed him, I'm planning on getting smaller prey and feeding him more than one. Does this sound like a good plan? Is there anything else I can do for him?

Ouch, poor thing.

Not a vet and no real substitute for a vet or someone with experience dealing with injuries.

At this point if he were mine, I'd put some antibacterial ointment on it, (pics look like there is some skin damage, but fuzzy so can't see it well) switch over to paper for antiseptic reasons and keep a close eye on him.

WIth an injury that deeply pressed into the body, I suggest get your snake to a vet. There could be internal injuries which may be life threatening in the long or short term. Last time I saw something like that it caused an internal hernia which resulted in having to euthanize the animal..

It was a mouse though but it was a pet mouse I had. It was also the last time I bought a rodent wheel that attaches to the side of a cage...the mouse managed to get stuck between the wheel and the side of the cage and the wheel made an indentation like that in the side of the mouse. The skin didn't look broken, but the fur was partly worn off. The indentation went away after a couple days but she then developed a bulge on her side which just kept getting worse..I realized it must have been an hernia, and her gut was spilling out of gut lining and into the rest of the body so it hung off the side...it was really weird though it didn't seem to bother her either way. I put her down as I knew it would eventually cause problems and I didn't want her to suffer.

Thus I highly recommend taking your snake to a vet for x-rays at least, to avoid any future problems or infections that can threaten your snake.

I agree with both the post before me. You should clean the wound if there is one, get the snake in as sterile an environment as possible and also get it to a vet for a professional opinion. I hope everything is ok and I'm sorry to see this happen.
