A Few Quick Questions from a Newbie

curbilly Dec 19, 2007 11:24 AM

Hi Guys and Gals, I am new to the hobby but have been doing alot of research, but still have a few questions. First one is that I am thinking of ordering from an online breeder due to the fact that my local petstores here in Jersey really don't have much in the line of geckos, considering a Tangerine, any recommendations on a good breeder. Second question is about an UTH, which brand and size do u guys recommend for a 20 gal long tank. Thanks

Online breeders are great, tho I recommend some sort of contact, either via email or phone to get a feel for the seller, and get clear what guarantees you are getting on the animal before you actually send money. As for UTH, I'm not sure what brand I use, but for a 20 long, I use the 10-20 gal size. Correction- I have exoterra and zoo med UTHs, and out of those two, I think I personally prefer the exo. As for what morph you want, that really depends on your price range and personal preference.

Thanks for the tips, I am also looking at getting the zoo med's reptitemp 500. Also what your feelings on the dishes(rocks) specially made for the worms and crickets, r they worth it?

geckogrl6 Dec 19, 2007 06:52 PM

If you're reffering to the vibrating type, I've never used them, but it seems like a huge waste of money. You absolutely will need a low-sided dish, or a jar top (upsidedown) for calcium powder, and for water dishes you can use anything that's not deep enough for your leo to drown, the ceramic ones they sell for mice feed and the like are my favorite. They are pretty and easy to clean.

Thanks for the kudos, just want to get everything in order, so his/her home is a perfect enviroment. The dishes i were referring to were the ones from exo terra. The one for the worms has a top and bottom with a lip on the top so they can't escape. The cricket one is also two pieces and looks like an anthill. It has a plug so when u unplug it the crickets can just crawl out and than u can replug it to keep them from annoying the gecko. Once again thanks for the help and advice

i have one of thoose mealworm dishes and i think its useless
only one of my geckos has figured out that there is food inside
i think it was a awaste of money and i now just use a jam jar lid lol

sleepygecko Dec 20, 2007 03:38 PM

Agree on the great work doing research first, we love to help out before hand.

I found the pet store bowls sometimes hard to clean, we now use ceramic "condiment" or "Pickle" dishes from Crate and Barrel along with a "soy sauce" dipping bowl for the Ca powder. (I know, we're still eating off of plates stolen from the University's cafeterias and our geckos have fancy china, but it is so much easier to clean.)

I feed mostly crickets and those bowls are useless, you're going to just dump the crickets in and let the gecko hunt them down, it is one of the best things to watch anyways. I do recommend a critter keeper for the crickets and a proper shaker/duster. Makes things easier.

Oh, and PAPERTOWELS! Sorry, just jumping ahead.

Good luck and welcome to the board.

Thanks for the info, I guess regular dishes is the way to go. I am glad u brought up paper towels, was considering reptile carpet what do u guys think

yellermelon2 Dec 22, 2007 01:51 PM

Well, paper towels are BEST. Repti-carpet isnt too bad, be carful picking the gecko up, they dig their claws in and can be ripped out. Little more to clean the carpet than paper towels too. Yeah I have upwardss of 50-60 geckos, and for babies and small juvies I use gatorade style tops and for adults I use ceramic style dishes.
