My gecko tank smells terrible!

lucky1406 Dec 19, 2007 11:31 AM

I've had plastic plants in the tank for a few months, and they have really gotten to the point where I Can't stand the smell. Do you have any tips of cleaning the plants to get ri d of the smell? I was reading on here about within a tablespoon of bleach to a gallon of water to sanitize, will that remove the smell? Should I try some kind of baking soda mix? Thanks for any help,
Nick

Bleach, water and a good scrubbing should do fine removing the smell along with sanitizing things. Just remember to keep rinsing with clean water until you don't smell any bleach anymore, and then rinse some more; you don't want to bleach your gecko(s)!

Why do the fake plants smell? They shouldn't be absorbing any of the waste products or the water, so they shouldn't have a smell or breed mold.

Is it your substrate? Have you checked for mold? How often do you clean? Just some random thoughts... Ours only smells sometimes when she has just left a "fresh one", then it goes away.

(It was me with the tablespoon of bleach, but read the bottle, I still haven't checked to make sure that was the right ratio.)
