what are the guidelines for whether a gecko is hypo or super hypo? Is it a spot count?

Super hypo is when a gecko is genetically not a patternless, but has no or 1 or 2 spots on the body. They would have an otherwise spotted tail and head. Hypo is simply a way of saying reduced pattern, or less spots than a normal gecko.

hypo by definition is the reduction of melanin or reduced black. meaning it could have small amounts of black spotting or brown spots. through selective line breeding supers have been made which the result is yellow or orange geckos with little or no body or heat spotting or patterning.

I just wondered if there was any set criteria for naming something as hypo versus not(like number of body spots as a cutoff point).

Hypo is actually a shortened term. It means Hypo-melinistic (not quite sure of the spelling) like R013IN said meaing reduced melinen or dark coloring. Hypo simply means a leopard with less spots. There isn't really a number that I know of because 'hypo' geckos usually still have many spots.
