Reptile Thermostat.....kinda urgent

ronald_durst Dec 20, 2007 05:48 PM

I just got home and checked on my temps for my 6 snakes and realized that one of my cages said 104f. Way to high. Thermostat was off however lights were still on. They all seem to be ok. But as far as the thermostat... i think its an allife 100 or something like that. I just read a post else where about them failing and doing exactly what mine did. Im watching it now but im afraid that it will do it again tomorrow. I dont want cooked snakes. Can anyone assist in this situation? Recommend a better thermostat? A solution maybe? Thanks

In the mean time, if your heat is from underneath, do these 2 things to avoid cooking your snakes.
1) make sure there is no more than 1/2 the floor space heated. 1/3 might be better.
2) provide a shelf, box, or limb so your snake can get away from the heat source, should it overheat. You will in effect be vertically stratifying your thermalcline.
Don't know anything about your thermostat.

Ronald:

I like to keep my snake den's ambient room temperature at about 77 degrees. I do this by using an oil space heater set up on an energy saver thermostat.

I keep the warm spot of each cage between 92 to 96 degrees. I use a prostat thermostat with a programed night time drop to 77 degrees.

I don't use lights at all, but I do have a sky light in the center of my snake den.

If you have any more questions you can call me at (408)981-6694.

Best of luck and Merry Christmas

Brian

The ND or PRO are the best options.

I am not aware of any Herpstats ever failing.
