Reptile Thermostat.....kinda urgent

ronald_durst Dec 20, 2007 05:48 PM

I just got home and checked on my temps for my 6 snakes and realized that one of my cages said 104f. Way to high. Thermostat was off however lights were still on. They all seem to be ok. But as far as the thermostat... i think its an allife 100 or something like that. I just read a post else where about them failing and doing exactly what mine did. Im watching it now but im afraid that it will do it again tomorrow. I dont want cooked snakes. Can anyone assist in this situation? Recommend a better thermostat? A solution maybe? Thanks

are you heating with a UTH, flex watt, lights or what?
do you have a secondary heat source?
If your temps jumped up to 104 F then you really need to disconnect the heat source.
Going a day or two, at room temperature, will not harm your snake and it will give you time to determine if it's the heat source or thermostat that are defective

im using just regular clamp lights. The only thing controlling them is the thermostat. I dont see the lights being defective since they go off when the thermostat tells them to.

it can be hard to control temps using lights.
Until you can get a new thermostat drop down to a 40 watt bulb.
You will still get a little bit of warmth but is very unlikely you will cook your snakes.
or just leave the lights off until you can get the new thermostat

yeah problem is that my girl likes the temp at 70 and my snakes are in a closet in our bedroom so they are affected too.

they can easily stand the 60's for a few days.

well i also have boas and pythons with my corn. Not same enclosure. Just same closet

Can you regulate the temp of the whole closet to about 80 degrees or so? If so then the only additional heat you'd need would be for the boids until you can get everything corrected for the corns. I'd be surprised if the closet wasnt close to that anyway if the heat lamp had the cage at 104.

yeah i just ordered the repti temp 500r. Its the only thing i can afford right now. I unplugged my thermostat and just plugged the lights into the timer. At this point im gonna just get everything to an even level around 80 and until i get the new thermostat. instead of a light for each one its gonna be maybe a couple of lights for ambient temps and i hope they'll be ok without basking areas for about a week.

Its only one corn and i know they are a lot more tolerant then boids. I have an amazon tree boa, 2 redtails, and 2 balls also.

check out big apple herpetologicals website. They have 1000 watt tstats for about $35. Jimmy Draybar put me onto these about a year ago. I bought 6 of them and they have working fine. One thermostat will do about 3-4 10 level racks using 3 inch flexwatt. Also check out curbside2go.com. They have the best prices on flexwatt. I have been to his place personally and he is good to deal with.

The more I read this the more it bothers me.
You have boas, pythons and corn snakes all kept in the same closet?
All heated by the same heat source, lights?
Boas, pythons and corns require different temperatures and humidities. They should not be kept under identical conditions.
You need to separate them into different areas so you can provide them with proper temps and conditions per species.
It is also better to provide them with some type of thermal gradient if possible.
all of this becomes pretty evident when you have to worry about the boas and pythons suffering when the temps are still acceptable, on a temporary basis, for a corn.
I'd hate to see you on the boa or python forums asking what to do about respiratory infections
