is my boa sick???

tyedor Dec 20, 2007 06:08 PM

i have aone and a half yr old albino het snow female that has refused her last two meals. i've had her for about a month. she shed a week after i got her and she ate the next day. she hasn't eaten since but today she bit at a live/knocked out rat but didn't wrap up and let go. i took her out for a couple min. and tried again, and she did the same thing. the guy i got the snakes(i got a male dh sunglow as well) from had another with alot of mucus in the mouth. he even gave me some of the med. and some seringes to inject it with to treat it in case mine got sick.
i checked my females mouth and there was a bit of bubbly mucus but i don't know whats normal.
any help on this would be very much appreciated. and if you think i should take her to a vet, does anybody know a good herp vet in sacramento?

If I were you I would take your snake to a vet.

Give Jeremy Epstein a call at (916)691-7387.

He will give you the name of a vet in the Sacramento area.

Tell him Hi for me.

Good luck and Merry Christmas

Sounds like both your boas are sick. I would take them to a qualified reptile vet.
Don't know of any in your area.

Why get boas that were exposed to a sick boa??

That bugs me, but you need to take them to a vet experienced with Boids, or at least snakes.

take it as advice the next time you're looking for a new animal.

Blunt, yes, but brutal honesty can help for those willing to accept it. There are plenty of sources for top quality boas, and this scenario could have easily been avoided.

I'd get it to a herp vet rather then using the meds that were given to you. Unless the guy you bought them from is a vet, He shouldn't be prescribing you meds. Not just illegal, but if you get the dose wrong, it could prove fatal, or create a resistance problem.

In the mean time, I'd get the temps up to mid 80's ambient and a hot spot more like mid 90's, and lower humidity to about 50%. This will help the Boas natural immunities to fight back.

But a vet is in order for sure.

thank you very much.... thats about where i have the temps right now.... dropping down to about 80 at night. i usually mist 2 times a day to get from a norm. 45-50 % to about 65%. better to hold off on that till she's feeling better???
