Wanting to get Cresteds...

ANIMALmenagerie Dec 20, 2007 06:46 PM

I want to get crested geckos for my 120 gallon tank(6' L X 22" H X 18" W). I think it'd be a huge mansion for them. I would like to find out how I should do this, though. What would you do if you had the tank for cresteds? how many of each sex would you get and how would you set it up? Oh, also, I know species mixing is bad, but can crested mix successfully with other species? Thanks.

are you getting adults? i wouldn't put less than full-grown geckos in a tank that big. are you looking to breed them? i suggest if this is your first time with crested geckos, not to breed right away. if you do a breeding group eventually, i wouldn't put more than 1 male and 5 females. there's room for more, but i read somewhere that more than that wouldn't be a good idea, can't remember why.

you could do a nice naturalistic setup, get a millipede or 2, even pink-tongued skinks. do you have the book, "Rhacodactylus: The Complete Guide to their Selection and Care"? i recommend reading that for tips.

i found what i was thinking of, it's in robbie hamper's book, "The Crested Gecko in Captivity," p. 32: "To breed Crested Geckos in a group, a recommended optimal ratio would consist of one male with three or four females in a large enclosure. More than four females in the enclosure could lead to overcrowding, the male not breeding all of the females, or stress, all resulting in low egg production or infertile eggs."
