National Geographic Python Attack?

MCConstrictors Dec 21, 2007 11:30 AM

Has anybody else watched this video? In case you haven't, here's the Youtube.com URL (http://youtube.com/watch?v=gI2AeYLZZWU). That clip's only for the actual "attack," but if you watch the whole segment I believe they say something along the lines of the python being 23 ft long... Does anyone else think that this guy looks like he's under ten feet?

I absolutely can't stand Brady Barr. The second I saw what that video was, I clicked off the page. And that snake is definitely not 23ft. I think you're right with 10ft or so.

If that idiot was pulling me out of my hole by my rear end- I'd attack him too!

what a dip wad- thats just another thing that gives big snakes a bad rap... 23 feet what-EVER!

I saw the episode.

the 23 ft snake was at a malasian zoo which he handled early in the show. the snake that bit him was 14 ft- he went back after a few weeks and captured and measured the same snake at the end of the show.

as to the program, i thought it was cool. if you have ever hunted retics etc in exotic places it is dicey scarey and overall, he handled things well imho. i have loked for retics casually along rivers in Bali and snakes in rainforest australia as well as singapore and the exotic atmosphere certainly gets your bp up- not to mention a bat guano cesspool with no good air, lighting or footing- would anyone here really have the courage to volunteer for that duty?

I also have done retics in the wild and some bat cave stuff. The caves are stale, humid but cool places. They are dark, of course. If there are bats, the extremely sharp rocks and slippery muddy floors are covered with guano. The odor will be choking sometimes. There are various insects, worms, crabs, snakes(sea snakes if near the sea) and who knows what else that may venture inside. Personally, I am the adventurous type, so I generally bare it in the interest of exploring. I couldn't even image wading through that water, I would probably draw the line at that just for my personal health.

The retic was quite small but while viewing a related link on "youtube" to see if I could get a shot of the actual bite, I was successful. He did actually receive a suprisingly bad slash/tear type bite from that snake in a very sensitive area that would cause a lot of pain. I have received some pretty bad bites by some big stuff and never reacted like that. Then again, I have never been bit on the back of my leg but I have been inked there and I can attest to the sensitivity.

I thought the snake was about 11 feet that got him and the one he found at the end of the show was not the one that got him. He thought it was initially, but it turned out to be a different one.

All in all, I thought it was an entertaining show. Brady's a bit dramatic sometimes but I generally like what he does.

I too have collected snakes worldwide including retics. We have always had a standing joke for over 30 years that when someone screams too loudly after a bite: we say"you scream like a girl". Since that episode we say "you sound like Brady Barr". I like his program but he's a little excitable with many things. Check some of the croc episodes. I also once had a large croc farm with 19 species residing there. Robbing the Cuban Croc nests, too say the least, was exciting but even my kids never sounded like Brady Barr. Never the less its entertaining and fun to watch. I laugh my a#* off...TOM CRUTCHFIELD

That was hilarious although the bite looked terible and was filled with bat guono however you spell it lol.

Hard to believe we're just now getting around to bashing Brady. As a kid growing up in the 60s my parents had a library of Nat.Geo. mags. dating back to 1918. I read them all. This is the primary reason I detest B.B. The secondary reason is Dr. Brady Barr. I get so sick of hearing about his Phd and then him opening his mouth to spew nonsense. I don't bash Corwin because he does'nt seem to take himself so seriously. I admired Steve Irwin because all he ever said was I'm the croc hunter I catch crocs which he did and he was very good at. Brady wants you to think he is some big scientist but then he opens his mouth.
The real question is why does N.G. let him get away withit. Any expert should have their work reviewed by other experts but they still let Brady speak seemingingly unedited.
One episode Brady said an adult Komodo can eat his weight in one sitting.I thought he was talking about pygmy shrews. An adult lizard goes from 300lbs to 600lbs in a single feeding. I don't think so. Jumping on acutus in Costa Rica he screams about a 2000lb croc. It was a nice croc probably close to 14 feet 800lbs give or take. But 2000lbs, please. If Steve ever estimated the size of a croc I generally found him pretty close.
Catching all 23 species of crocs was the most sickening. All he could talk about was how no one had ever done it. What a great day for science but I never saw the scientific value in it.
One episode an ingineous individual was kissing a huge croc and holding his face in his hands. Right next to Brady was Rom Whitaker, someone I greatly admire and Brady does'nt introduce or acknowledge him. It was awkward he acted like he was'nt there. Because it is all about Brady. I have no respect for him.Right here on this forum,I admire Tom C. more than Brady at least I know he has done something(bred crocs). There are tons of croc people and reptile people to admire Brady is not one of them.
The retic was a skinny 10 footer.
