Looking forward to next year

RobHaneisen Dec 24, 2007 01:57 PM

We have two feet of snow on the ground in central Massachusetts and most of my snakes are deep in cool-down (except my holdbacks and a few I purchased this fall). All the babies I wanted to sell have sold. Something I'm looking forward to for next year is a pair of snakes I briefly entertained selling separately until I realized they might make a good pairing. She is a snow possibly het for hypo (purchased as a baby from Jeff Alloway three years ago) and he is a hypo tri-color het for anery (I produced him three years ago). Worse case scenario from this pair would be triple-hets. Best case (if she is het for hypo) would be ghosts het for albino.

But beyond those two extremes I could end up with anerys het for albino and hypo; and hypos (tri-colors and tangerines) het for anery and albino.

For starters, I'd like a good clutch from the snow. She threw seven eggs this summer, six of which I immediately wrote off as slugs. The last one was weirdly yellow but still somewhat solid so I kept it and it ended up hatching out a nice anery het for albino, possibly het for hypo (I paired her up with an anery het hypo this season).

Here's a pic of the prospective couple exchanging hellos before going down for a long winter's nap. What's the pairing you are most looking forward to in 2008?

That is one helluva pair of snakes. That Snow is really cool looking. I always felt the Snows were not getting the attention they deserved due to the focus on babies. The adults are so much cooler looking, good luck with everything

Rob,

Out of curiousity what size is the tub they are in? I have a few males I am considering using this year but I am unsure if they are large enough, so I figured I could compare them to your male for size.

They are in a 32 quart tub. The male hypo is about 4.5 feet and the snow is just over 4 feet. The hypo weighs just under 800 grams. The female snow is 561 grams. I would consider both of these three-year-olds middle of the road as far as size. The daddy of the hypo is 5.5 feet and weighs just under 1,300 grams so I think the tri-color hypo still has some growing left in him.
