Shedding ???

dcjketner Dec 24, 2007 02:10 PM

My ball python just shed, but it came off in small pieces. The humidity has been around 55-70% the last couple of day. I've been misting several times a day, ever since his eyes clouded over. What else could be wrong ????

Could be a number of issues: health, stress, not enough humidity at the time that's needed, not enough palatable water, etc.

Does this normally happen or is this a one-time event? I have had animals that normally shed fine sometimes go through a bad shed. While misting is good, the environment may be drying up faster than you think. How is the animal setup?

I've only had him for about two months, this is his first shed with me, I got him from a couple that has had him since a baby, he is 6 years old now. I have the zoo med reptile bark in there for the substrate and a 52 oz & a smaller bowl probably about 20 oz for water.

Do you have a screen topped enclosure? Those tend to poor maintainers of humidity. Since this is the first shed with you, ensure his/her environment is setup properly and then monitor the next shed. If it comes off in pieces, it's time to evaluate all conditions.

Ya the top is a screened lid, for gall tank. The shed came off in pieces, there are still some on him, what should I do from here. Do I need to cover half the top ?

Yes, you need to find a way to cover "most" of the top. Otherwise, the humidity cannot be maintained. Screen tops are very poor lids for maintaining humidity.
