OMG snake pics!! XXX rated and more!!

rainbowsrus Dec 26, 2007 12:22 AM

Today I found two of my boa constrictors going at it. Heath (Motley male) was all over Vanilla (Ghost pos super). I wasn't sure if they were actually copulating but then they moved a little and I saw this...

Way cool, looks like I just might be having motley babies this year!!

AND.....

That was after seeing an even more awesome sight yesterday. Same cage different snakes, I spotted Heath (Motley Male) on top of and copulating with Ruby (Coral Albino). The copulation was QUITE clear as there was an inch of hemipene exposed. I first spotted the copulation at noon. I checked back through the day and at 5:30PM they were STILL at it looking the same. What a stud!!!

She was a bit nasty at the beginning, now she's calm and easy to handle just like all the rest. Not sure how much was me being untrusting of her. I really believe they pick up signals from the handler. I see it all the time with babies. They're just fine with me because I have no fear of them and know just how to pick up and hold them. Hand them over to a novice and tag!!!

I usually alternate between no flash and flash. You can see I typically have a pic w/out flash followed by the same pose/angel with flash in all my pic sets. Sometime sone or the other was just crappy even though I take a few of each setting. This shoot has my normal sequence. The pics are darker I believe due to the colors on the snake, the extreme contrast makes it harder to capture and/or adjust afterwards. I quite often add fill light to get the pics back to a closer to reality color. But on this group adding more fill light oversaturated the saddle colors so I left them a bit darker.

A guy I know once told me flying was fairly inexpensive to rent the plane. Only pay for the hours you are actually running the engine??? I remember he said something about renting it "wet" which includes fuel?? Not like a car where you pay daily rental plus mileage. How expensive is it to rent a plane, round and/or rough numbers are fine.

I wouldn't say renting is inexpensive at all. If you need to get somewhere long distace, it is WAY cheaper to fly airline. (But not as fun, LOL)

Prices fluctuate depending on what FBO you rent from but I'll give you the numbers from my FBO. I usually rent Pipers, either an Archer or an Arrow depending on what I plan on doing.

Archers are your general low-wing trainer, nothing fancy. I would pay $79 per hour, and yes that is only while the engine is running. They also add on a fuel surcharge here which is usually around $15 and hour extra, and that changes depending on the plane. I don't pay that though, since I am an employee.

The Arrow is what I use to go on trips. It's faster and has retractable landing gear. That one I pay $89/hour.

I want to learn the Piper Lance for the trip to Daytona in '08, because that one can hold 6 people. That one is even faster, is a high performace plane, and has retractable gear as well. That one runs $130/hour. (Plus surcharge for non-employees)

So yeah, it can get really expensive, but it's a lot of fun and I think it is worth it.

Here is a list of the rental fleet my FBO has at all three locations. This shows the hourly rental rates before the surcharge. They are a little sneaky because I don't think you can look up how much the surcharge is, unless you ask them.

I've put in bold the ones that I fly and also the Lance that I want to learn.

That makes sense since my friend is only VFR rated and only flies around locally. He probably rents something like the first one on your list. Obviously the planes with instruments are more expensive and have more to maintain.

Yeah, if he is only needing a VFR capable plane, and flies something old and small he probably isn't spending too much. Especially if he rents from someone who is way out in the boonies, its probably cheaper.

When I was getting my IFR rating I was renting this really old Cessna 172 from a guy WAY out in the middle of nowhere. The plane was held together with duct tape in some places, and obviously had seen better days. I was only paying him $55 an hour for his plane, though, so it was quite a deal!

hold it long enough so do you still want me too??? Dave how is that small twin making out and any updates on the one with the enlarged eye? Hope you had a great Xmas and yeah I spent every opportunity with my boy and now won't see him until Jan. 5 or so, so not much to look forward too and took care of the snake cages with a very thorough cleaning so I am just catching back up.
Bob

rainbowsrus Dec 29, 2007 02:20 PM

The smaller twin is eating and growing like normal, still a little behind her sibs but doing fine. Actually thinking about letting her go, I just have too many.

The enlarged eye has shrunk some, she's also eating and growing fine so eventually will adopt her out. She is a pretty one except for the eye, and appears like the bone around the eye socket is also slightly deformed. Will probably alwways have one eye larger than the other but not as bad as it was at birth.

Glad to hear you had a good time with your boy!!!

He already has two dates planned, Pearl and Apricot!!! At least that's what I'm thinking now.

Have to decide which two to put with Pistachio and what/where to breed the other two females. Thinking about outcrossing them but to who, more as a test of genetics. Need to work out the method of expression, is it recessive, dominant or codominant. Once I have a better idea, I can formulate my outcrossing for color and designer morph plans!!!

I can think of a few possible outcomes from pearl x normal breeding trials....

1) all normal = recessive trait (assuming genetic)
2) all pearls = Dominant trait with pearls being homozygous
3) half normal, half pearls = dominant trait with pearls being hets.
4) All inbetween normal and pearl = either codominant with pearls being super form or multigenic line bred trait and will be harder to cross over and refine into other lines.

LOL, can ya tell I think about this stuff all the time?

Off to lunch, will read/respond to the other replies later

Hey Dave,
I forgot. Why are you calling these "pearl"? Is it because of the eye color?

I don't suppose you have a fresh picture of BU-TO-31 do you? Now that christmas is over I need to send you some money.

Hope yours was a good one. My sons best friend was nice enough to give us all a 24-36 hr stomach virus. 3 here in the house and my older son at his girlfriends house and now her too. I have had a cold for about a week. Maybe that has kept me from getting it.
Be well. Happy holidays

it wouldn't be the same as one I produced so there would be a real big empty void there for me since it was just an acquisition (how does Dave say it oh yeah) if you are good then maybe I will let you get one of her kids "bad man"lol I think she will make the redder babies for me as opposed to my other female (double het) but the other will throw some pink-red heads at birth which is what I want and would love to make something that could eventually beome like this one but hopefully I can find a great pastel female so I can put a holdback sunglow or albino junlge on her and try to get something like this or better (boa god willing of course)

20-30 seconds, why I am suprised huh? I always knew I was sloweeeeeerrrr than most but I have been trying to learn about the Nikon DSLR's and stuff and some seem like a great deal and other just really expensive. So when I get one in a couple of years I will be able to know what I want so. The ones that were cool were about 5-7 megapixels and forgot to even inquire about the zoom but I want something to where I can get far away and shoot with flash and not wash out from that distance but nothing like close-ups of course. So what zoom do you have Dave, can you shoot far enough away and not wash them out and what megapix you got I thought I read it was 5 or so awhile back but I'm not getting old and the memory isn't so great
Bob

rainbowsrus Dec 29, 2007 02:38 PM

I have a full DSLR, Canon EOS 20D 8 megapixel. I have three lenses for it, a 28 - 200 zoom, typical lens of choice. Also have a wide angle lens 16 - 35, great for snake room shotsand Macro shots as it can focus as close as 1 foot away. Lastly I have a 70 - 300 zoom with Macro, great for macro shots from across the room and while out and about bringing the far away subjects closer.

Sheesh... looks like you are gonna have a killer year in '08! Good thing your BCI are breeding earlier than your BRBs, maybe you can sell some BCI babies before your BRB babies come in. Where ya gonna put them all?

You are gonna have way too much fun.

Was just discussing this very point with a friend, Looks like for the most part at least, all the BCI litters will be on the ground and some sold off before the BRB's start to drop. I have 279 baby tub slots in my various racks. So, anything over 279 babies at any one time and I'm in doubling up mode. I do have another several dozen larger slot sections aswell. Of course right now I don't have the space to set up all the racks at once so I need to get my butt moving on the garage room for the boas!! Onnce I get that done, I'll have room to set up every cage/rack I have. Then turn around and fill them right up with babies!!!!

When was the last time Coral shed? I think I when I try to breed that I am gonna try to get my females inbetween shed cycles or close to the shed cycle is gonna be when I first put my bci together and will hope for the best, of course all easier said than done and boas don't listen or read so there is no telling. Dave do you keep your boa room heated now that winter is coming, if not what is the coolest it gets or it does it with all the heating stuff going in there with the countless snakes you have especially the bci spectrum of the rainbow.
Bob

rainbowsrus Dec 29, 2007 02:51 PM

Coral last shed on 11/29. LOL, they will do what they want when they want. I just got them together and let them do their thing. Gonna pull some apart soon for feeding again, number one on that list is the motley x group, have not had them apart for months, the boys won't stop breeding the girls.

Just the cage heaters is enough to heat the entire room. I suspect the new garage room will need a seperate heater though. Not countless, have 177 in the room right now. + 3 upstairs in quarantine, + one out on breeding loan, - one in on breeding loan = I currently own 180 snakes!! Actually less than that as I have 8 sold, paid for but not shipped and 8 more on hold not yet paid for.

Yeah, it really helps when the male thinks he's a porn star and poses so both sets of genitals are fully exposed, THEN, keeps it up for hours!!!!

I was (still am) pretty excited to see both of my male Motleys in full action within a day of one another!!!! Talk about one busy cage!!!!!!

Both of those pairings will produce key components for some of my long term projects. I'll be looking to hold back a Female Motley het coral albino and a Female hypo Motley het anery. The Motley het coral albino will be towards a Motley sunglow (with the Sunglow part from summit salmon and coral albino). The Hypo Motley het anery will be towards Motley ghosts and motley aneries. Both of which maybe even towards super motley varieties as well!!!

Step one, get girls with required genetics!!!!
Step two, get males with the rest of the required genetics!!

I for one never realized how long the male snake organ was. I know talk of probing depth but in my feeble mind that did not equate to extended length. There was an entire inch of exposed hemipene. He "rode" her like that as she slowly moved around the cage for 5 1/2 hours that I saw. No telling how long before that the copulation actually started.
