Species Compatible with Cresties

ANIMALmenagerie Dec 26, 2007 10:25 AM

Ok, to let everyone know beforehand, I know that mixing species is not a very good idea. But I do know that some species can be successfully housed together. So...

I have a largish tank, 6' L X 2' H X 18" D. I am putting cresties in it. I would like to see if there are other species compatible with them that I could put in there for some variety. Thanks.

My brother houses a golden gecko with a crested, and doesn't seem to have any problems. Golden geckos require *slightly* higher temps than cresteds, but he's got a tall enclosure with a lamp on top, so basically what happens is the golden spends a bunch of time in the upper areas of the enclosure, and the crested stays lower most of the time. They don't really get in each others' way much. Goldens are not ideal pets, however; they tend to be skittish, not liking to be handled, and they are *FAST*. My brother has tons of experience handling them, and reptiles in general, and he still avoids handling that gecko any more than he has to, and occasionally loses control of it when he does handle it.

At least one person on the boards here has a big millipede in with one of his cresteds, and that's supposedly ok. Whatever you do, everybody in the tank needs to be of similar size and habitat requirements in order to even have a chance at living harmoniously, and you'll have to watch things pretty closely at first, in order to ensure that no fights or predation attempts are occurring.

Since you already know that it may or may not work well, I won't harp on that point except to recommend that you be extremely careful, and that you wait to set this tank up until you have a lot of free time to observe the goings on. Make sure that you have a separate tank available for housing some of the animals in case of incompatibilities/bullying/dominance issues.

I've got the milli in with my female, and they don't seem to notice each other much. The 'pede just cruises around and eats carrots. The girl struck at him once, when I first put her in with him, but since then they've been eating from the same container, no problems.

Okay. I've heard that gargs and cresteds may get along. What are your opinions on that?

I am not too sure about the golden geckos. In the end, It'll probably end up being a one species tank.

I am on the side of one species tank in almost any case...

But to answer your question, gargs and cresties are no good together, they occupy the same environmental niche and will fight for food and dominance. They are VERY aggressive towards one another. Kinda a bit surprising to me, but I've seen the lost tails and the wounds from a chain pet store who thought it would work ok.

it has worked in some cases, but gargoyles in general are more aggressive, and you would most likely end up with tailless cresteds.
