can anyone recomend a good thermostat

DMD87 Dec 26, 2007 11:48 AM

I have my blood pythons on a alife 1000 thermostat tat i bought about a month and a half ago, well I went to check on my snakes this morning and the thermostat failed, the cool side of the cage was 85F hot side was 105F. it seems to be back to working now but im gonna by two new thermostats(my jcp's are on a alfe also) I only had 2 75watt ceramic bulbs on the thermostat, also is it wrong to put more than one cage on a thermostat as long as i know the temps in each cage and i dont overload the wattage.im gettin ready to build 4 new cages for my snakes adn when i built them cages i was gonna by two helix (i wasnt gonna build the cages for about two months thoughso right now i dont really have 260.00 to buy two helixs right now so could anyone recomend a go thermostat thats not more than 80.00

For the price a johnson controls a-419 is a bargain.
I used one to hatch royal eggs this year and worked fine. The alife you mentioned is an on off thermostat as is the johnson controll but the johnson controll is a much better unit and capable of 1500 watts. It is a digital readout unit with a 2 degree differential. One nice feature is a fail safe that can be set to shut the heat off if the probe fails. Also they have replacement probes,I have 3 of these and have never had any problems. They have a heating and cooling mode so if you needed to you can actually use one in the summer to cycle a cooler or fans to lower temps. Dont get me wrong I would prefer Helix but there around $140.00 b ut they are proportional meaning they dont shut off they vary the voltage to maintain a set temp. You can buy 3 johnsons for the price of one Helix. heres a link I couldnt find it but theres a place you can buy these for 52.00 shipped.
