Lost my dwarf last night...

Jug Dec 26, 2007 02:38 PM

Got up this morning and he was dead in the bottom of the water section of his 8x6ft enclosure.... He had good weight, normal activity and seemed in good health the previous day(clear eyes, no discharges, normal bad attitude, ect.). Only indication that anything was up was that he had refused his rat the night before. Unusual for him... Nothing wrong or disturbed in his habitat. Heater all right, no electrocution ect. Had him he was since he was 14in. and I was twelve... nine years... He will be missed... A great animal with a typical crocodilian attitude.... Very sorry to lose him... O well, these things happen eventually, probably nothing I could have done... Still feel bad though...

Sorry to hear this. Reptiles are so frustating this way when seemingly healthy animals drop dead.
Sounds like he was well taken care of.

That's too bad - it's always the worst when you don't know it's coming. Have you considered having a necropsy performed?

Well, I examined him myself when I had a little time, and there was a large, mucus covered, rat hair ball stuck in his throat but close enough that you could see it when you looked down his throat. I have never heard of a crocodilian being killed by a hair ball and it has never been a problem in the past, but that is almost what it looked like. Nothing had changed in his habitat and it had been the same for several years with no problems. Freak accident maybe?
