Buying W. Hognose Hets.. Questions

jusmebabe Dec 26, 2007 05:48 PM

I'm thinking if getting a pair of hets but not they may not come from the same breeder. My questions is are there issues with compatibility from different breeders?
I have heard this in the past with boas and wasn't sure if this was with W. hogs as well.
I could buy an albino but I think the thrill of waiting to produce from hets and possibly seeing an albino emerge is the ultimate for me.
Lastly my thinking is a male can breed multiple females so If I can't get ahold of a single (unrelated) W. hognose should I go for a male since they can breed earlier and more females?
Thanx for any info you may be able to give me.
Joel

I think the incompatability to which you are refering is the occurance of T or T- albinos. What this is in boas, ratsnakes and a few other critters is more than one genetic "mess up" that causes albinism. Any simple recessive such as albino or anery is hidden by their respective dominant genes, so an albino bred to a normal produces normal looking animals het for albino, and a the same is true for anery. An anery bred to a normal produces all normal offspring het for anery. What happens when you cross an albion with an anery? Well, assuming that there are no other het genes involved you get all NORMALS het for both qualities, often reffered to as "double het."
Breeding a T and a T- albino together is just like crossing an albino and an anery together. You will get all normals het for both albinos. This is called complementation in genetics.

But, all of that crap I wrote doesn't matter, because there is only one albino gene in western hogs.

If I were you I would get and albino male and het or normal females. Good luck breeding etc.
