Update on my Mali Rescue

Techtress Dec 27, 2007 02:35 PM

I wanted to post this on repticzone since initially that is where I went for information, but the login function seems to be broken and I know that there are quite a few people here on both forums.

I've finally given him the name Dimansi, which is Bambara (most used native language in Mali) for Sunday, the day I got him. I was told initially by his previous owner that he was a she and was 4 years old.

He weighed 193g on 11/10 when he went for his first vet visit for checkup and deworming for pinworms. I bought him a 40g breeder and proper lighting (two 7.0 UVB lights secured under his wire top, 150w ceramic heat light and 150w basking spot) and have been feeding him a varied diet of foods off of this shopping list I created for him (http://fondrecollectionsranch.freeservers.com/Uromastyx Food Shopping List.htm). His temperatures have been stable with a 110 basking area and ambient in the 100s on the hot side and in the mid eightys on the cool side. I have not worried about increasing the temperature any more than this because he does pant if he basks for extended periods of time (about an hour or so). His cage has paper towel for substrate and terra cotta hides for easy cleaning with a bleachwater solution and a ceramic food bowl.

He went to the vets again for another round of deworming on 12/13 where he weighed 207g (14g increase). His next visit will be on 01/14 for a fecal test to make sure the deworming has worked. I have also located a 4'x2'x2' custom built cage that I am making payments on (lost my job a month ago) that has built in UVB/flaurecent fixture as well as basking light fixture, ceramic heat bulb fixture with 4 vents and two front opening doors and a temperateure controller with temperature probe (a steal at $175).

Im hoping his next fecal test will show hes clear and I can move him into his new tank with a sand/coconut hisk mixed substrate and secured rock hides. If not, I will move him anway so he stops glass dancing so much out of boredome and lack of space. I'm really hoping that hes clean though!

Heres a photo the first day I had him home basking:

Heres a photo from today after I helped him get all of the loose shed of of the front 1/3 of his body (still needs some help with his feet though):

Nice work on the uro. It always feels good when your efforts payoff.
