Rear fanged

BlakeMolone Dec 27, 2007 05:04 PM

Well ive been looking in the other snake classifieds for a while and have noticed some fairly dangerous snakes for sale without a warning. Its horrible to the pet trade when someone dies from a dangerous animal but enevtualy people are going to die from harmless snakes and thats is going to want to make people put restrictions on owning non dangerous snakes and mabey completly ban venomous snakes so we need to be carefull on dealing snakes like boigas, fwc, and things like that. What are your opinions?

What types of rear-fangs are you talking about?

Why do they need a warning? Do you see warnings in ads for burms?
I wouldnt post a warning, no need to.

i looked in the other snakes classifieds and saw no snakes that were considered medically significant. you mentioned false water cobras, ive been reasearching these and havent heard of a case that involved hospitilization, everything i have seen on them has said that the reactions to there venom was more like a bee sting(swelling and local pain)and all the rear fangs oin those classifieds were also marked as rear fanged.

i've been bitten by both false water cobras and western hognose snakes... it's just a very very painfull sting... but nothing that needs medical attention...

they weren't my snakes, and they were unhandleable... i've never been bitten by any of my rear fanged snakes before...

"Fairly dangerous rear fangs"

...and what basis are we using to come to this conclusion? To my knowledge, very few rear fanged snakes can be considered "dangerous", as either a) their venom just doesn't effect humans very much or b) their venom dewlivery system is inefficient and not likely to deliver a medically significant bite.

You mentioned FWC, and while their venom has been compared to Crotalus atrox in terms of potency, both their small yield and delivery systems would most likely preclude a medically significant bite to a healthy adult (absent an allergic reaction).

Please clarify which species you're referring to when you reference "fairly dangerous rear fanged snakes".

Thanks...

yes it is fwc delivery and amount that makes them non medically significant. in fact coming from the IL. Department of natural resources, you can own fwc in illinois, and IL. is pretty srtict on reptiles, the only two they said they considered(this was off the top of their haead though). were boomslangs and twig snakes. im wondering what he was calling "fairly dangerous" out of curiosity..lol

Boigas are fairly dangerous and have come very close to killing people on the island of Guam and some people even say they have killed people but im not sure about that because theres no death records.
