California King Snake Eating Habits

Dirigo Dec 27, 2007 07:05 PM

Hi everyone. I'm back with another noobsky calking question.

Our new snake Blazer has been eating a defrosted mouse every seven days like ckockwork for the oast 3 weeks. We place him in a darkened wicker basic so he can dine in privacy.

It's now been 11 days & he shows NO interest in the mouse. Is this unusual? What is the outer limit that these guys might go before feeding?

Thanks again for all your help. We really love this snake!

Tom

Most snakes will skip a feeding now and then . . . may not be hungry, may be bored, may have experienced some temp changes, may be coming up on a shed (are you in an area where it is chilly outside?) Remember, most species of snakes den up in winter in most areas of the country and go without food for several months. So no worries unless the snake continues to refused food for weeks at a time or exhibits other symptoms of illness. When my black rat declines his weekly mouse I just toss it (or give it to the corn snake as a bonus) and wait a week and try again and he almost always chows down with gusto.

That is most excellent & useful news. It is in fact the height of winter here now. We'll keep an eye on things from that perspective...

My daughter & I like to handle the snake pretty much daily. Should we back off during this time?

Thanks for your help!

Tom
