Housing hatchlings together

mike3 Aug 25, 2003 06:22 PM

Hi i have 3 two week old malis hatchlings in my 25 gallon tank. Today i witnessed some weird behavior. My fatest hatchling(Brown), was basking with an average sized hatchling(green), Well the brown hatchling actually bit the green hatchlings arm. The green hatchling darted away and kept on running around in the tank. Was the brown hatchling being dominant or did the brown hatchling mistaken the arm for a cricket or wax worm. I have never seen them act this way before, they are all still eating great. Infact the green hatchling just ran up to the brown hatchling and licked its tail a few times, and at the momment all of them are glass danceing in the corner right next to me. Anyway, I would like to keep them as a trio for about a year, but do you think i have to separate even a small group of 3 hatchlings?

it would probably be a good idea to separate them, that was an act of dominance. i guess as long as everybody is still eating and healthy they can stay together, but keep in mind what happens to them right now will have a lot to do with how they turn out later, physically and personality-wise.

There's always going to be a pecking order in any group of animals. If the one wasn't injured and it is still gaining fine and eating, then I'd keep them together. If you see that it isn't gaining, it gets injured or the other one keeps it away from the food then you will need to separate them. -Lucy
