Plants for a Crestie Terrarium

ANIMALmenagerie Dec 27, 2007 09:30 PM

I am in the process of making a planted terrarium for some cresties I plan to get. I would like to have a nice mix of plants, but being that I know cresties don't like totally humid environments, what plants would you guys think to be good to put in a crested terrarium? Thanks.

Unless you've got a good knowledge of plants, and a green thumb, I don't suggest a planted enclosure.

I'm in the process of ripping mine out. The one for my male didn't provide enough cover, so I added some leaf litter. The leaf litter made mold. The crickets laid their eggs, which in turn hatched thousands of young to ravage my plants. It also takes away a lot of room (what with the drainage layer and the soil)

It may be way easier to do fake. I hate to say it, but..still.

Just my two cents. I used some Mother-In-Law's Tongue, Pothos, Spider Plant, and some random philandroden(sp). Good luck with your choice.

Well, I mean I am not a total green thumb. When I want things to grow, I can do it easily, but usually I don't deal with plants. I surely won't be feeding crickets free-roaming in the tank. I make these dishes I use and they totally contain the crickets inside them. That way there is no mess. I also plan on adding only hardy bromeliads, creeping fig, a few pothos, and a few other miscellaneous, tough plants. I have the patience, and my tank is a 120 gal, 6' X 24" X 18"(L X H X W). The amount of fake plants needed to cover this terrarium would be monstrous. I also plan on using plants like hibiscus, that are larger and woody-stemmed. I will try it, see how it goes. If in the end it doesn't work out, so be it. I can always use fake within the real, too. As long as I don't get any plants too particular, I think I can get them to live and grow fine. Really, all I need to know is if the geckos will tolerate most plants or if there are plants that they won't tolerate because the need or make too much humidity.

Thanks.

IN ADDITION TO THE QUESTIONS IN MY PREVIOUS POST:

Is it harmful to buy plants that have used chemical fertilizers? What plants can stand up to the gecko's abuse?

Thanks.

In that case, along with the other plants previously mentioned, see if you can't get a Ficus Benjamina to grow in there. That tank is going to need a good amount of light if anything is going to survive.

Chemical fert. is definitely bad if anything decides to munch on the plants. Mother-In-Law's-Tongue can stand up well to jumping geckos, as can the ficus. I never had a tank that big, so I don't know of any other possibilities.

Honestly, the guys over on the dart section know more about plants than anyone else here. Look for slaytonp. Patty is awesome. She'll probably refer you do Dendroboad.com (big time dart forum). Good luck, and let us know what happens.

I'm just a newbie w/Crested geckos ... my tank is planted with ficus benjamina, which Goliath seems to like very well. These last few days, though, he's been hanging out in the bromelaid (a nice sized one).

Remember to remove all the old soil with the little white styrafoam balls away ... do cresties eat those things? I've always had to remove them from my chameleons' and day gecko's & leo's plants.
