ok i have read that you can't use cedar due to toxicity. My question is can pine be used as a substrate or should i stay with news paper and aspen?

I use cypress. You can buy it at Home Depot for $2.00 a 40lb. bag. I just hate using plain paper. May be more effecient but not near as nice for my snakes IMO.

Cypress is good. Holds humidity up when it's misted. Or you can try cellsorb. I saw it in Daytona. Petsmart has it.I have not tried it,I'm using aspen.

Going to give the cypress a try.

Watch that the Cypress is 100% Cypress.

Depending where you are in the country your Home Depot version is likely a Blend. Not all the things that go in blends are the safest.

Actually i went to Home Depot yesteday and they had small 2.2 cc bags and they looked liek they had weed control stuff on it....Going to stay with the aspen and keep some on newspaper..

I also use newspaper. My one experience with cypres was bugs. It may have been just a bad bag but had a lot of little bugs in it.
