resting your breeders

PhillyBoyInTN Dec 28, 2007 11:44 AM

I always hear about resting your males so as to not overwork them. What about females? One of my females I want to give me Pastels so I'm running three pastel males through her. What kind of rest would she require?

I don't really think it matters how often females are bred as far as getting worn out, but they don't need to be bred too often in order to lay a good clutch. IMO any more than twice a month per female is wasting your males time. She will ovulate when her follicles are ready whether she has been bred only a couple of times or 50. I am no expert, but I think a lot of newer breeders breed the females way more often than needed. I know I have been guilty of this in the past which I believe made some of my males wear out before my females were ready. I guess if you have 3 males for one girl you probably don't have to worry about it though.

Good point John. Our breeding schedule calls for each female to "receive" a male twice each month. We also separate and rest both the males and females 2 days each week.
