Help with an ID of this newt

asokolik Aug 25, 2003 06:39 PM

Hi, I'm hoping that someone might be able to help me with an ID for this newt. It was sold as a red belly newt but while it does have red spots on the underside it doesn't look like a red belly newt to me. It is brown and has 3 dorsal ridges and a keeled tail (photos below).

Thanks in advance!

well...there isnt enuf red on the underside to be a firebellied newt i dont think. since he has a brown coloration and dorsal and tail crests/fins, i am thinking more twards a Crested Newt.

Some kind of warty newt (Paramesotriton). Looks very similar to the P. hongkongensis that I had, but it's hard to identify specific species for this genus.
