Question on sexing probes.

coolluigi007 Dec 28, 2007 08:52 PM

Hey I got a question that I haven't seen address yet. (I'm sure it has, I just haven't seen it since I started watching the forum.) What is important to look for when buying sexing probes? I feel that making a mistake when your sexing a snake could very easily ruin the snakes day. I have searched around the net and seen lots of different kinds of probes and they all are different prices. Is the little bit of extra dough worth it? Or is a probe a probe?.

Thanks in advance.

How cool i am actually in a forum, this is my first time on a forum, thought i should test it out. I think you should get the ones that have a ball TIP on the probes.

Welcome to the forum then!
Yes, All the ones I am looking at have the ball tiped. But there is still a big price difference out there and from the picture I have seen it looks like there is a big difference in how one set is made to another set.
Just wondering if any of the big whigs had any pointers or if its just kind of all the same.

Honestly, don't get anything too fancy (do you really need the deluxe 10 piece kit for one species of snake?), or too small. Too small, and if you use too much force, you can actually puncture the inside of the female snake's cloaca bits, creating a falsely probed male. A ball tip is nice, and you really only need a three piece kit. LLL Reptile sells a nice three piece kit for fairly cheap (that's what I've been using for the past couple years), but I'm sure you can find some elsewhere as well.
