Pacific Gophersnakes

Jerry Dec 29, 2007 03:56 PM

I pulled several off the road this year. Sadly, most were DORs. Of the ones I helped off the road, I bagged 2 of them. Both were newly hatched.
The first one, I didn't see @ first. We slowed down because an owl was hopping funny in the road & we thought something was wrong with it. As we aproached, I noticed the snake that the owl was hopping towards. The owl flew away & I jumped out & grabbed the snake. It is a nice looking one, but I was planning on letting it go. However, I ended up taking it home & I ended up using it @ the Fire Department Open House a couple of weeks later. So I never made it back out to release it, so here it stays.

The 2nd one I bagged looked exceptional nice in color. I used it too @ the Open House to show the people the color varies in snake spiecies. (I showed several rattlesnake too) Anyhow, this one is really turning out NICE! The pacific gophersnakes are a true jewel.

Thanks, Jerry

very nice finds .It would be cool to live where all we have to do is go out and look for our own but if that was the case there would me none left in the wild LOL

The biggest problem is loss of habitat & delvelopment of housing. One road we go road crusing on has became a "shortcut" for people getting around to the housing development. Where it use to be one car driving by an hour, is now 60 cars passing by in an hour. We pull more dead snakes(DOR) off the road than ever could be collected. We mainly just take pics of what we find, then help them across the road. One night,in less than 2 hours we pulled off over 20 DORs. Herping in Nor Cal is not be a reason for snakes to disappear

I agree with Jerry. Recreational collecting of a few snakes pales in comparison to the real threats to wild populations of snakes. Habitat fragmentation and destruction are the real culprits.

Beautiful snakes btw Jerry. The second in particular is a real looker.
