the opposite sex..

bergmantis Dec 30, 2007 09:48 PM

I bought a 05 hypo female a year ago and was garanteed it was a female. Shes about 5' and 9 lbs currently. I always noticed her spurs we a bit large for a female. My 7ft 16lb female has spurs half the size as the hypo. Today, I noticed that white thing in her water dish shown in the photo. Can that be a sperm plug. I keep the water dish clean so it cant be algae. Right now, I have no one close to me to probe the snake and I dont want to have to go through vet expenses just to find the sex that can be done from a breeder friend at the next reptile show in a few months. Based on the photos does anyone seriously think it can be a male? The breeder I bought it from is very reputable. If a breeder garuntees the sex, and it turns out opposite, what can really be done about it?

That my friend is a male. U must remember that probing is not always an exact science. I would contact the breeder and voice my concerns. He/she should replace the snake if it is indeed not what you thought u purchased. This is however just my 2 cents. Best of luck.

Second pic, you see those keeled scales around the spurs? I've only ever seen that in mature males.

on the bright side you have a good mate for your 7' female!

I picked up a "female" anery in Tinley 2004 from a "reputable" guy. I never sexed it because I trusted him...well it is most certainly male, and when I asked him about it ...he didn't remember selling in to me...

Good Luck...

Do you still have a reciept or some proof of the transaction. Did he provide any source of paperwork?

What makes me think it's a male is the beefiness of the tail. It actually gets bigger in diameter just south of the vent. That's a dead giveaway for a male. All the other comments are valid, of course.
Show goers should get a receipt with: breeder, line, origin, sex, year, seller's name, date and venue, along with sales price and method of payment and seller's warranty. Take a picture of the transaction with your phone or bring a camera.

Always get a receipt, no matter what!!! Most shows that I've been to that receipt is necessary to leave the venue with the animal. Have the vendor make notes on the receipt about the individual animal, including the vendors reference number. Has to be calling the baby something to differentiate it from all the others. If the vendor does not know them one from another, IMO not a good breeder or maybe a wholesaler. Not saying those animals are any less than the guy next door but I like to get history, to know it was an individual, not just one in a pile!!

As a breeder, I can say for certain I do NOT recognise every baby. BUT, I do have pics of them all and can usually verify the identity with those pics IF I know which one we are talking about. Also, for me, I keep records of which baby went where so I can also figure out what baby by the original buyer. I've seen some of my babies for sale in ads and was able to verify they were originally produced by me by comparing my baby pics with the current ones. patterns do not change, colors do!!
