Crossing Rainbows?

medyssa Dec 31, 2007 03:11 AM

I am interested in knowing a little bit more about crossing Rainbow boa species. After looking at the cute picture of the Guyanan rainbow boa in the previous post I would be interested in seeing how a Brazilian and a Guyanan or Colombian cross baby would look. If anyone has tried and has had babies please let me know. If its not recommended. I'll probably not try. I dont have anything but Brazilians right now but I love the Colombians and Guyanans as well. It would be really cool if Brazilian colors with the bright reds and oranges as well as the crescents would be shown in the cross babies.

Touchy subject!! I have no knowledge of any crosses that may have already been done. I do know there is a LOT of frowning on "mutts" in the herp trade. It's definitely a gamble crossing SSP's, you could produce something really cool but then again if you don't you have a pile of babies many will frown on and you might have a really hard time finding homes for them all.

Just as an example, if you figure a Typical BRB litter at 20ish babies worth $125 on average each that is $2500 worth of babies. If you were to cross it with another SSP instead of another BRB there are lots and maybes.....

If it even works??
If you still have 20ish babies???
If it produces something really cool looking??

You still have to market these crosses. Many will pooh pooh even the thought of crosses. Others may like them but what to do with them. There would still be unanswered questions that could lessen their value...

Can they still breed?
What would the offspring of the crosses look like?

Of course there is also a possible upside, you could produce something stunning that everyone wants and it is reproducible etc.

Like Dave said, this seems to be a very volatile subject. (It's New Years Eve and my wife is almost finished getting ready to go out, so I won't blather on about it.) But my opinion is that they are your snakes, you can do what you want with them. I think it would be neat to see what you can create. Personally, I'd like to see a Brazilian x Argentine to create a line of smaller, yet still colorful RB's. The thing is, how does anyone really know there isn't any "mixed blood" in their supposedly "pure" snake anyway?

If you do decide to experiment and ending up having babies, I promise I'll buy one.

Good luck and Happy New Year,
Ed

I would not be surprised if it has not already happened with Peruvian rainbow Boas and Brazilians. It would be hard to tell the difference if babies were mixed as the pure breds look so similar in appearence.
