black hogs?

megalon Dec 31, 2007 09:09 AM

hi all,i'm new to this forum,so please excuse me if this question has been posted before.i'm originally from san diego, but when i was 12,my dad was transferred to god-forsaken south carolina, where my parents decided to"get away from it all" and moved to a tiny little community called cross.the only upside to going from palm trees to pine trees was the almost overwhelming assortment of herps that were around to be found.my favorite of them all were a couple of jet-black hogs that i stumbled across every now and then.ok,finally i get to my questions;are they southern or eastern hogs?does anyone know a reputable breeder who produces them?how difficult is it to switch them from toads to rodents?the area i finished growing up in has mostly been cleared and developed,so catching them myself would be harder than ever.any help here would be hugely appreciated!thanks in advance.

They are Eastern Hognose snakes and they can be switched over to a rodent diet. It will take some work but it pays off. I have found for me the best scenting tool is a green tree frog. A.C. from GradeAReptiles is the best guy I know of to get these snakes from. This is one I got from him. Also you kind of never know what color a baby eastern will turn it to, but looking at the parents can give you a clue. Here is what I mean by color change. IT is still getting darker with each shed and is a little over a year old now. Note the baby is eating live pinks. He is now on FT large rat pinks.

NICK,

Glad to see the lil platy doing so well! Looks like he might end up being a black phase. He looks to be in great condition. Nice job! Feel free to e-mail me off the forum to discuss price ranges.

Happy New Year!

Thanks A.C.
Your advise really helped with scenting, it takes FT unscented right away from my fingers. Once I got it unscented, it has not refused a meal.

Hey AC, how do you get yours off of scented? Adults are easy for me, but these juvis are real brats!
