Dark stools: do they indicate parasites?

bruce_y Dec 31, 2007 03:59 PM

I recently rescued a very skinny Leo who has started to eat like a champ. His stools are pretty dark, though. Does this indicate anything bad like parasites?

Also, he has been eating a lot during each feeding, sometimes 15-20 mealworms. Is this too much for him? Or should I just feed him until he's full?

Finally, he has only been eating mainly off tongs. Is this a bad habit? My main concern is to get him put on weight, but I don't want him to get too picky either.

Thanks!

He will be fine eating from tongs life-long. Not sure how big he is, but 15-20 regular mealworms is fine for a decent size leo. I hope you are dusting them? Dark stools can mean nothing at all, if occasional. IMO given the situation he's in, it is most likely due to his digestive system getting back in full gear. I am seeing the same thing from my leo who just finished a round of antibiotics, and I'm thinking it may be due to a slight imbalance in her gut. If it doesn't right itself soon, I'll be trying some probiotics, something I'd recommend for yours as well. You can find them online, someone, maybe ESU?, makes a probiotics specifically for herps, tho I have never used it yet.

Dark stools sounds like a lack of urinates.

After antibiotics it's sometimes good to give them Acidophiliz to build up the beneficial bacteria in the stomach again. It worked wonders for me when I had a gecko not want to eat after fighting off pinworms last year.
